Fall-protection systems can be classified as two basic types. Active Systems and Passive Systems. Active Systems are fall-protection systems that require each workman to take some positive action on his own to protect himself from a fall. Passive Systems are systems that, when installed properly, protect workers without them having to take any positive action to protect themselves. The active system requires the worker to do something to ensure his safety; for instance, to put on a safety belt or harness and attach to a secure location or rope grab device.
